How to Tame Frizz and Beat Humidity for Perfect Hair

No matter your hair type, we can all agree that dealing is frizzy hair is every woman’s nightmare. It can happen anytime but it’s especially bad in the summer, when humidity can transform your shiny and smooth hair to stuck-your-finger-in-a-light-socket in no time. To stop frizz, it’s important to understand why it happens in the first place.

What Causes Frizz?

Have you ever had a leaky roof? It’s caused by water getting under the shingles and flooding the wood underneath. The wood swells and the shingles loosen, allowing more water to enter. According to WebMD, your hair’s outer layer--the cuticle--looks like a shingled roof. If yours hair is dry or treated harshly, the “shingles” on the cuticle lift and allow moisture in, causing the hair to expand (just like wood does) and appear frizzy. In the humid summer months, the problem can worsen because of the moisture in the air.

Fighting Frizz

The key phrase above is “dry or treated harshly.” Curly or coarse hair especially needs a lot of care and attention to stop it from drying out and being more vulnerable to frizz. Here’s how you can show your hair some love and fight frizz at the same time:

  • Cut back on shampooing: If you have curly or coarse hair, shampooing every day is not typically necessary. Skipping a day or two can help rebuild the natural oils in your hair that help control frizz.
  • Do not skip the conditioner: Dryness is a major cause of frizz, so you need to be rigorous in your conditioning regimen. Leave-in treatments and hair masks are great for taming frizz. Deep conditioners help restore moisture and should be used on a regular basis. (TIARA Shower Cap® is ideal for deep conditioning and for maintaining your style when you skip the shampoo.)
  • Check the ingredients: Natural oils are best because they get absorbed into the hair. Think argan, olive, or coconut oil. Synthetic silicones, on the other hand, sit on top of the hair, creating a residue that can diminish shine and make your hair appear dull.
  • Brush with caution: Brushing too much or too roughly can raise the cuticle of your hair and make it more susceptible to frizz. The damage can be even worse if you brush wet hair. And, as frustrating as tangles can be, pulling at them with a brush is the wrong way to go. Use a detangling spray or conditioner to smooth hair before gently brushing.
  • Heat may not help: Flat irons and curling irons can cause more harm than good when you have curly hair. Try to minimize regular use or apply a heat protectant before use.
  • Still have some frizz? You can tame it on the go with the use of detangling spray, smoothing serum, hairspray, or leave-in conditioner. Explore your options and find one that works best for you.

Frizz doesn’t have to be a fact of life. A little extra attention to things like conditioning, brushing, and styling can save you from the crazy frizz we all dread!
