Frizz: the bane of the curly-haired woman’s existence. It can happen anytime but it’s especially bad in summer, when humidity can transform hair from shiny and smooth to stuck-your-finger-in-a-light-socket in no time. To stop frizz, you need to understand why it happens in the first place.
What Causes Frizz?
Have you ever had a leaky roof? We all know the cause: water gets under the shingles and wets the wood underneath. The wood swells and the shingles loosen, allowing for more water to enter. According to WebMD, your hair’s outer layer--the cuticle--looks like a shingled roof. If hair is dry or treated harshly, the “shingles” on the cuticle lift and allow moisture in, causing the hair to expand and look frizzy. In humid summer months, the problem can worsen because of the moisture in the air.
The key phrase above is “dry or treated harshly.” Curly or coarse hair needs a lot of TLC to stop it from drying out and being more vulnerable to frizz. Here’s how you can show your hair some love and fight frizz:
Cut back on shampooing. If you have curly or coarse hair, shampooing every day is not typically necessary. Skipping a day or two can rebuild the natural oils in your hair that help control frizz.
Dry gently. In a rush to get dried and out the door, you might be tempted to rub your towel all over your hair. This can raise the cuticle, leading to frizz. As Today recommends: pat dry to avoid creating friction between your towel and hair, and use a microfibre towel for even less friction.
Do not skip the conditioner. Dryness is a major cause of frizz, so you need to be rigorous in your conditioning regimen. Leave-in treatments are great for taming frizz. Check the ingredients of your conditioners. WebMD notes that natural oils are best because they get absorbed into the hair. Think argan, olive, or coconut oil. Synthetic silicones, on the other hand, sit on top of the hair, creating a residue that can diminish shine or even look dirty.
Brush with caution! Brushing too much or too roughly can raise the cuticle of your hair and make it more susceptible to frizz. The damage can be even worse if you brush wet hair. And, as frustrating as tangles can be, pulling at that them with a brush is the wrong way to go. Use a detangler or conditioner to smooth hair before gently brushing.
Heat may not help. Flat irons and curling irons can cause more harm than good when you have curly hair. Try to minimize use or, at the very least, apply a heat protectant before use.
Still have some frizz? You can tame it on the go with a little spritz of detangler or hairspray, a dab of leave-in conditioner, or even a tiny bit of hand cream.
